What Divides, and What Unites, Right-Node Raising

چکیده
We argue, following Barros and Vicente (2011), that right-node raising (RNR) results from either ellipsis or multidominance. Four considerations support this claim. (a) RNR has properties of (b) Where these are combined, the structure repeated RNR: a pivot created through contains right-peripheral secondary (c) In certain circumstances, one other derivation is blocked, so behaves like pure (d) Linearization RNR-as-multidominance requires pruning. The same pruning operation delivers RNR-as-ellipsis, which explains why two derivations must meet ordering constraints.

This article presents a systematic content analysis of three religious-conservative and two pro-secular newspapers in 1996–2004 in Turkey, and discusses some findings and their implications regarding elite values and democratization: considerable internal pluralism within both religious-conservative and pro-secular elites; general consensus on democracy but not on democratic norms’ application ...
متن کاملWhat unites Europe and what divides it? Solidarity and the European heritage reconsidered
Despite the on-set on new divisions, there is a strong case to be made for the view that ultimately Europe is more united than divided. There is still significant continuity with the post-war project of reconstruction and peace and that this common ground that constitutes the European heritage needs to be given greater recognition. One of the defining features of European self-understanding is ...
متن کاملRight Node Raising
Right Node Raising is the term used by linguists to refer to a construction in which a shared argument surfaces at the right periphery of a coordinate structure (e.g. Phil loves, but Mary hates, Greek tragedies). This paper begins by introducing some of the basic properties of this construction, and then moves on to present and compare two of the main approaches to analyzing this construction. ...
متن کاملWhat Divides Textualists from Purposivists?
Recent scholarship has questioned whether there remains a meaningful distinction between modern textualism and purposivism. Purposivists traditionally argued that because Congress passes statutes to achieve some aim, federal judges should enforce the spirit rather than the letter of the law when the two conflict. Textualists, in contrast, have emphasized that federal judges have a constitutiona...
متن کاملRight Node Raising in Parsing and Generation
We discuss a grammar engineering account of non-constituent coordination in the clausal syntax of German as it occurs in real corpus data, generalizing the approach of Forst and Rohrer (2009) to right node raising cases not captured so far. We compare our account to the unimplemented metagrammatical technique by Maxwell and Manning (1996) and point out that many of their ideas can be captured u...
